Brief profile: Since 1988, MOm’s aim is the protection of the marine and coastal environment through the study and protection of the critically endangered Mediterranean monk seal. The ultimate goal of the Society is to ensure the survival of the species in a healthy marine environment. The Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) is the rarest seal in the world and the most endangered marine mammal of Europe, with less than 600 individuals left worldwide. More than the half of this population lives and reproduces in the Greek seas.
MOm’s staff along with volunteers implements integrated actions in the following five key areas: Scientific Research, Rescue and Rehabilitation, Protection and Management, Information and Public Awareness and Education for Sustainable Development.
